The recently released Nokia X6 combines a range of advanced features with a stunning slim line handset which operates via a touch screen interface. The X6 ticks all the boxes of a popular mobile phone.

The phone measures 111×51x13.8mm and weighs in at 122g. The 3.2″ capacitive touch screen is capable of displaying up to 16million colours ensuring clarity and depth of colour, at 360×640 pixels. An accelerometer is built in which allows the images on the screen to rotate allowing the user to view the phones content in both portrait and landscape forms. The screen is manufactured in scratch resistant glass, protecting it from everyday knocks and bumps.

A variety of connectivity options include class32 GPRS and class32 EDGE. Internet connection is provided in by HSDPA at speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. WiFi access lets users take advantage of hotspots at various locations around the country. Bluetooth version 2.0 is installed as standard allowing file transfer between compatible Bluetooth devices.

The X6 includes a camera boasting 5MP, which operates at a pixel resolution of 2592×1944 pixels and even includes Carl Zeiss optics. Computers have various components, and the computer case is what holds them all together. These cases have changed over the years but remain the central part of any PC. By understanding the cases and how they integrate with the other components, one can better understand computers.

Computers have a number of major parts. The computer case is what houses all the internal components of a computer. Within the case, the motherboard is the single largest component. Attached to it are the CPU (a microprocessor) and the memory (RAM). Ethernet capabilities (for internet connectivity) are usually integrated directly into the motherboard. Other major components inside the case include the optic drives (such as DVD), hard drives for data storage and the power unit.

To connect the computer to peripheral devices, the sound card, video card and cards for USB and other connecting ports all attach to the motherboard. Typically, these peripherals are the monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse and any other devices that need to be connected to a PC.

The optical drives are located in the front of the computer case along with the additional USB ports for easy accessibility. The other peripherals of the computer usually connect through the back of the case.

This case is the largest part of the computer and is typically constructed mainly out of a steel or aluminum. Plastic and acrylics are also used, but their purpose is usually just to enhance the design or look of the case. Much of the weight of the computer (apart from the monitor) is in the case so one should consider its weight and avoid those with sharp, dangerous edges when purchasing. Edges that are beveled or finished are much safer.

Other materials also used to construct computer cases include plastic, Plexiglas, wood and, believe it or not, even Lego blocks! Computer cases have also been referred to as the computer chassis, cabinets, boxes, enclosures, towers or simply just the CPU cases.

When the PC first came onto the scene, the case was horizontal with the monitor being placed on top of it. This design of the case had the power switch behind it with all the ports also placed behind the case. This was a pretty awkward (some would say incomprehensible) position because the operator had to get up and reach all the way behind the computer to switch it on.

When the vertical computer case came on the scene, the monitor could be placed on the desktop with the vertical case (also called the “tower stand”) below beside the desk. This was more convenient because it left more space on the desk while allowing the user to access the switches from the front panel.

Some computer cases have been growing smaller in recent years, but there is currently a limit as to how small they can get. While smaller cases are more compact, they often do not have enough space to allow proper cooling or for new devices to be added to the computer. Due to these factors, computer tower stands remain popular.

Several weeks ago I heard about an instance of theft from a business in the Cowichan Valley involving a Hard Drive stolen from a PC from an individual portraying an I.T. Company called “Tek Systems.” When I first started out in the technology industry physical security was a more a priority, computers were four times the price they are today, and not every business had one, we were more worried about the computer going missing then the data. Now days it is different, almost every business has computers and our data is very valuable if not more valuable then the computer and hard drive holding it.

The incident with the hard drive being stolen was a prime example of one of the oldest hacking techniques called “Social Engineering” In technological terms, social engineering is a non-technical kind of “Hack” that relies human interaction and often involves tricking other people to break normal security procedures, in this case the individual portraying him self as a PC technician performing an upgrade on the business PC, thus fooling the person into allowing him to work on the PC.

So what can we do to protect ourselves? In this day in age all we hear about are firewalls, routers and anti-virus software, it seems that very second day there is a new virus that will crash the internet and end all humanity, criminals trying to get our most private information and credit card numbers at every click of a button, but if we buy the latest anti virus and firewall software were safe, well at least for a few weeks. We often over look some of the easiest and simple techniques to protecting our data, the physical security of it.

The first one is locking the PC, almost every PC now days comes with an area to place a pad-lock to lock the case so no one can enter without a key, as well there are many solutions on the market to physically secure the PC to a desk such as computer cages that bolt on and cables similar to bike locks.

The second is know your information technology providers, and make sure your staff know who they are, have a single point of contact for your business an office I.T coordinator per say, who is responsible for coordinating computer repairs within the office with your information technology providers. A good company will provide ample notice of any upgrades to take place; they shouldn’t just show up at your door. When the technician has there doing repairs or upgrades he should walk though booting up and check the PC with the user or I.T coordinator ensuring that the repair was successful.

The third is secure your data, there are many types of software out there to do this, most laptop manufactures have it built in security measures in place, requiring passwords to even boot the laptop, these built in features are rarely used. Data encryption software is relatively cheap and simple to use, most criminals do not have the expertise and or skills to crack this type of security, but that still does not stop them from stealing your computer, it just protects your data and your company’s reputation.

Where there is a will there is a way, criminals will always find ways to steal your data and equipment but if there is deterrents and measures in place to make it harder they will generally continue on to the easier target, we just have to remember to practice safe computing.
